The City of Gig Harbor was founded in 1888. During the expedition of Lt Charles Wilkes, the captain used gig longboats to explore small harbors; hence the city was named after the ‘gig longboats’. Gig Harbor is known for it’s perfect picture postcard view of Mount Rainier looming in the background of picturesque water views. This Pierce County city at the base of the Kitsap Peninsula is predominately a bedroom community for Tacoma. The area is also known as “the Maritime City” and celebrates its history of boat building and commercial fishing with several historical sites. While the fishing fleet now is far outnumbered by recreation vessels, Gig Harbor remains home to all types boating enthusiasts. Gig Harbor’s Scandinavian and Croatian heritage has a strong influence with its nautical lifestyle and fishing-village character. The completion of the second Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 2007, known as the twin Tacoma Narrows Bridges, makes commuting a breeze and shopping a delight. Visit the many boutiques, galleries and restaurants in the downtown area. Gig Harbor was also known for being an agricultural center, logging and lumber area and Native American fishing grounds. Be sure to visit the downtown Jerisich Park, next to the Skansie Brothers Park with waterfront benches, grass area for picnics and a covered Pavilion for community events. It is also home to the Fisherman Memorial, a large bronze statue, depicting a fisherman hauling in his catch. There is also a public use moorage dock where boaters can stay for a limited time for free. The beach is public, but access can be difficult as parking is limited.
